I just returned to the Main Press Center in Beijing and there is a tank out front with a soldier peering through its window. There is also one in the rear of the massive building, where armed soldiers in fatigues stand guard.
Think efficient. The Chinese have a way of making things look easy.

BEIJING — The first thing you see when passing through baggage claim at the airport here is Starbucks. The next thing is Kentucky Fried Chicken. They are signs of how for decades now China has embraced Western culture, and how the decision for a Communist Party to eagerly welcome a market economy has transformed the lifestyle of generations.
I have seen scorpions in my dishwasher, on the walls and near the back door of my Summerlin home. My children always run first to the exhibit of the crafty little arthropods at Red Rock Canyon. Scorpions freak me out like the thought of Tom Cruise running the world.
DAY ONE OVERVIEW – With Day 1 of the Beijing Olympics almost done, the U.S. medal count was nonexistent. Cuba, Uzbekistan and 16 other countries had bragging rights over the Americans. The closest thing to glory was a Colorado resident winning gold for the Czech Republic.
