Opportunistic Cimarron rolls

Cimarron-Memorial's softball team has played well most of the season but hadn't been able to get over the hump against some of the area's top teams.

Spartans coach Steve Gorden hopes Tuesday's 7-1 road win over top-ranked Centennial can serve as a catalyst for the rest of the season.

"We were trying to find something to bring us together, cohesiveness, and I think this did it," Gordon said. "They were so excited and so focused when the game started. And beating the No. 1 team in Southern Nevada is going to really help their confidence."

The Spartans (15-6) took advantage of seven errors to score seven unearned runs. Cimarron got on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning thanks largely to three Centennial miscues.

"We put the ball in play, and they had a few bobbles," Gorden said. "We put pressure on their defense."

The Spartans added four runs in the fourth to pull away, again keyed by a two-out error. Evelyn Terrazas hit a three-run homer to highlight the inning.

Chelsea Williams and Jennifer Liddell each had two hits for Cimarron. Liddell also got the pitching victory, allowing no earned runs on seven hits.
