R-J boxing writer IOLE wins

Review-Journal senior sportswriter Kevin Iole is the 2006 winner of the Nat Fleischer Award, bestowed for career excellence in boxing journalism, the Boxing Writers Association of America announced this past week.

Iole, 47, was honored in a vote of former Fleischer Award winners. Past winners include not only retired Review-Journal boxing writer Royce Feour and Las Vegas-based Associated Press columnist Tim Dahlberg but legendary sportswriters Red Smith, Pat Putnam and Jim Murray.

The first fight that Iole covered for the Review-Journal was the Evander Holyfield-Buster Douglas heavyweight championship bout at the Mirage in 1990. Other major fights he has covered over the past 16-plus years include ones featuring Oscar De La Hoya, Lennox Lewis, Felix Trinidad and Mike Tyson.

A four-time winner of Nevada’s top sportswriter by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, Iole also was named outstanding journalist by the Nevada Press Association in 1999.

Iole will be honored by the BWAA at its June 8 awards ceremony in New York City.
