Raiders add a veteran quarterback

Updated April 4, 2023 - 2:51 pm

The Raiders have signed veteran backup quarterback Brian Hoyer.

The 37-year-old Hoyer, a 14-year NFL veteran, played under Raiders coach Josh McDaniels in two different stints when McDaniels was with New England.

Hoyer was with the Patriots in 2017 and 2018 when McDaniels was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. After playing the 2019 season with the Colts, Hoyer returned to New England in 2020 and 2021 and remained there last season while McDaniels was with the Raiders.

The Michigan State alum also began his career with the Patriots from 2009 to 2011 after he was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent.

Hoyer has played in 76 games, including 40 starts for seven teams, and has thrown for 10,668 yards and 53 touchdowns.

His most productive season came with Cleveland in 2014 when he made 13 starts and went 242-for-438 for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Hoyer threw for 19 touchdowns and just seven interceptions in nine starts the following season with the Texans. That was also the year he made his only playoff start, a 30-0 loss to the Chiefs.

Part of Hoyer’s role with the Raiders is expected to be serving as a mentor for a young quarterback who could be acquired in the draft.
