Raiders sign veteran free-agent cornerback, a former 1st-round pick

Updated July 24, 2023 - 6:06 pm

In search of an experienced cornerback who can claim a starting job, the Raiders signed veteran Marcus Peters on Monday.

The deal is for one season worth upward to $5 million.

A native of Oakland, California, and a seven-year NFL veteran who has made stops with the Chiefs, Rams and Ravens, Peters is a noted ballhawk who has 32 career interceptions. He was a first-round pick by Kansas City in 2015.

Peters, 30, spent the past three seasons in Baltimore, but he missed the 2021 season after suffering a knee injury in training camp. He returned last season to play 13 games to mixed results.

The Raiders are hoping Peters, now two years removed from the knee injury, can return to form. They desperately need someone who can create turnovers, a team weakness for years.

The team also signed defensive lineman Isaac Rochell. A six-year veteran, Rochell has played in 70 games and registered 98 tackles 9.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

Also, the Raiders worked out former Rams cornerback Troy Hill, an eight-year veteran and rotational player who had 65 tackles during the team’s Super Bowl season in 2020 and finished with 50 tackles last season.

Veterans report to camp Tuesday. Their first practice is Wednesday.
