Raiders to interview high-profile candidate for coordinator’s job

Updated January 24, 2024 - 4:14 pm

The Raiders will interview former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury for their offensive coordinator’s job.

Kingsbury, 44, spent last season as the offensive assistant at Southern California. Before that, he coached the Cardinals from 2019 to 2022 after serving as Texas Tech’s head coach from 2013 through 2018. Kingsbury coached Patrick Mahomes from 2014 to 2016.

The Cardinals’ record under Kingsbury was 28-37-1 during his four seasons. But he oversaw offenses that finished in the top 10 in 2020 and 2021.

Among the other candidates the Raiders have interviewed or are expected to interview for the job are Rams assistant Zac Robinson, Bengals quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher, former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and former Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

In his introductory news conference Wednesday, new Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said he is working diligently on identifying the right fit for the job.

“Just like everything else that we’ve done throughout this process, I honestly believe this, I don’t think everybody is meant to be for the Raiders. I don’t think everybody is meant to play for the Raiders or coach for the Raiders,” Pierce said. “I think that’s going to be something I really dig into as we go into that process.”

New general manager Tom Telesco pointed to some important historical traits of the Raiders.

“The Raiders have an identity on offense. It’s speed and get the ball downfield,” he said. “I think that’s going to definitely want to be at least part of that. But there’s more that goes along with that as far as being able to run the ball when you have to run it and play-action pass. But we’ll find the right offensive coordinator that’s going to fit this team at this time.”

Bengals quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher, who was scheduled to interview for the job, was promoted to offensive coordinator by Cincinnati.
