Rebels falter late in loss to Cougars

Brigham Young scored two runs off three UNLV pitchers in the bottom of the eighth inning and defeated the Rebels 5-3 on Friday in Provo, Utah.
The Rebels dropped to 14-22 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars are 18-13 and 5-3.
Ryan Kowalski went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Blake Gailen was 3-for-4 with a solo home run for UNLV.
Kowalski singled with one out in the ninth, but Chad Miller struck out and Xavier Scruggs grounded out.
Rebels starter Craig Heyer (4-4) gave up all five runs in 7 1/3 innings.
• UNLV SOFTBALL -- Stephanie Bregante and Heather Slettvet combined on a one-hitter as the Rebels (27-16-1, 3-0 MWC) defeated Utah 3-1 at Eller Media Stadium.
UNLV's Brittany Freight broke a 1-1 tie with a double in the fifth that scored Bri Bernardi, then scored on a throwing error.
Jodi Norton's home run off Bregante in the fourth was the Utes' only hit.
• CCSN BASEBALL -- The Community College of Southern Nevada defeated Colorado Northwestern Community College 7-2 and 7-5 in Rangely, Colo.
Ty Manumaleuna led CCSN's offense, going 2-for-3 in the first game and 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs in the second game.
The Coyotes (28-13, 18-8 Scenic West Athletic Conference) moved into a first-place tie with College of Southern Idaho.
• CCSN SOFTBALL -- The 20th-ranked Coyotes beat No. 10 North Idaho College 4-3 and 7-1 in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, to take over first place in the SWAC.
In the first game, CCSN (23-9, 19-7) scored its runs in the seventh. Maritza Espinoza's two-run, two-out single broke a 2-2 tie.
Lydia Pierce (5-1) pitched five shutout innings in relief to win the second game.
