Rebels finish ninth in NCAA men’s golf regional

The UNLV men’s golf team shot a third-round 7-over-par 295, its lowest score of the tournament and second-lowest of the day, but finished ninth Saturday in the NCAA Sugar Grove Regional in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The Rebels, who finished at 48-over 912 at Rich Harvest Farms, needed to finish in the top five to advance to the NCAA Championships, May 23 to 28 in Hutchinson, Kan. Illinois won the team title at 16-over 880, followed by Alabama-Birmingham (882), Purdue (894) and Southern California and California (both at 896).
UNLV junior Carl Jonson tied for 25th at 11-over 227; junior Kurt Kityama tied for 29th at 228; sophomore Zane Thomas tied for 31st at 229; sophomore AJ McInerney tied for 40th at 232; and junior Nicholas Maruri tied for 53rd at 237.
Illinois’ Brian Campbell led the tournament wire-to-wire and won medalist honors at 5-under 211.
