Report: UNLV assistant Schroyer to become head coach at Tennessee-Martin

Heath Schroyer, a UNLV basketball assistant coach for the past three seasons, is close to finalizing a deal to become the head coach at Tennessee-Martin. An official announcement is expected Thursday, according to CBSSports.com.

Schroyer would be the second assistant to leave Rebels coach Dave Rice’s original staff. Justin Hutson returned to rival San Diego State last summer.

Schroyer has previous head coaching experience at Wyoming (2007-11) and Portland State (2002-05).

Rice said he hopes to develop a position for a special assistant to the head coach, and if that happens, Schroyer’s departure would create two openings on Rice’s staff. Stacey Augmon and Todd Simon are the full-time assistants.

Max Good, UNLV’s interim coach for 22 games during the 2000-01 season, is a leading candidate to return. Good was recently fired as the coach at Loyola Marymount.
