FACE IT: WE STINK

Question: How in the world are we this bad in handball?

I’ve been watching a bit of the sport since the Olympics began here in Beijing and can’t understand how a country with as many athletes as we have can’t discover enough capable bodies to form a team good enough to qualify men and women every four years. We haven’t done so since 1992 and only got to compete in Atlanta in ’96 due to a home-country exemption.

Let’s see: Dribble. Pass. Move. Screen. Shoot.

Sound familiar?

Word is, those passionate about handball in the States tried recruiting former basketball players to adopt the game some years back, but it didn’t take. It also appears we’ve had a few nut-jobs running the national team.

The program is now controlled by the USOC, which in February 2006 revoked the governing duties of the sport from the U.S. Handball Federation for reportedly these reasons: disputes over funding, general lack of fiscal discipline and accusations of incompetence.

At least we now know what those Enron executives were doing in their spare time.
