MANNY’S GREED

Age-old question: Why do seemingly intelligent people do stupid things?

It’s what Manny Pacquiao should be wondering of himself today for blowing what would have been the most lucrative fight of his career thus far.

The May 2 bout between Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas has been called off for now because the former wouldn’t agree to a 50-50 split of revenue.

Pacquiao is apparently listening to two advisers in the Philippines more than he is promoter Bob Arum, which is as dumb as it is short-sided.

Someone needs to explain to Pacquiao about the importance of cashing in when the window of opportunity opens like it is now for the world’s best fighter. It doesn't stay open for long, not for anyone.

He pounded Oscar De La Hoya in December, setting the stage for a 2009 in which the biggest fights and purses Pacquiao has ever seen would present themselves.

And the first time one is, he gets greedy. This, despite the fact it’s Hatton who should demand more of the split based on the revenue a much stronger fan base will generate.

Maybe the fight can be saved. Maybe it's not over just yet.

But for that to happen, Manny Pacquiao has to act as smart as we always assumed he was.
