UNLV baseball team falls to No. 9 Beavers
Pitcher Mike Stutes stifled UNLV to lead ninth-ranked Oregon State to a 3-1 baseball victory Friday at Corvallis, Ore.
Stutes (9-1) allowed one run on two hits and struck out 12 in eight innings for the Beavers (29-8), who sent the Rebels (14-27) to their eighth straight loss.
UNLV starter Craig Heyer (4-6) allowed three runs in six innings.
The Rebels' Chad Miller doubled with two out in the ninth off Oregon State closer Eddie Kunz, but Ryan Kowalski flied out to center.
Miller's fifth-inning triple scored Efren Navarro Jr. for UNLV's run.
• UNLV WOMEN'S GOLF -- The three-time defending champion Rebels remained fifth after the second round of the Mountain West Conference Championships at St. George, Utah.
UNLV shot a second-round 320 at Entrada at Snow Canyon and is at 69-over-par 637.
Brigham Young leads at 32-over 600, followed by Texas Christian (606), New Mexico (618) and Colorado State (627).
BYU's Rachel Newren has the individual lead at 4-over 146, two shots ahead of TCU's Valentine Derrey and New Mexico's Jodi Ewart.
Rebels freshman Natasha Krishna is tied for fourth at 150, and senior teammate Seema Sadekar is tied for eighth at 153.
Other UNLV scores: freshman Melissa Mabanta 163 (tie 28th), sophomore Nicole McGirr 171 (33rd) and sophomore Kasi Lee 176 (34th).
• CCSN BASEBALL -- The Community College of Southern Nevada defeated Salt Lake Community College 3-2 in nine innings to salvage a split of their Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake won the first game, 11-0.
Tyler Lavigne (6-2) pitched four innings of one-hit relief, striking out seven and walking two, to get the victory in the second game.
The 16th-ranked Coyotes (35-14, 25-9) are tied with College of Southern Idaho for the conference lead.
• CCSN SOFTBALL -- The Coyotes (27-13, 23-11) lost to Salt Lake Community College 13-11 and 5-2 in eight innings in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Russell Road Recreation Complex.
