UNLV golfers fall just short to BYU in MWC tourney

The UNLV men's golf team shot the best round of the day -- by five strokes -- but fell one stroke short of Brigham Young in the final round of the Mountain West Conference Championships on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.

UNLV was the only team under par Saturday, shooting 5-under 279 to finish with a 5-under 847 total. BYU, despite shooting 2-over 286, hung on to win the team title at 6-under 846.

Brett Kanda and Jarred Texter led the sixth-ranked Rebels' charge from an eight-stroke deficit to BYU entering the final round. Kanda fired a 4-under 67, and Texter shot 68, helping UNLV put four players in the top 15.

Seung-su Han, tied for the lead after two rounds, shot 74 to finish tied for fourth at 3-under 210, C.J. Gatto (70) tied for sixth at 211, Kanda tied for ninth at 213, and Texter tied for 13th at 215.

Texas Christian's Robby Ormand and San Diego State's Adam Porzak both shot 71 to tie for first at 6-under 207, with Ormand winning the playoff to take medalist honors.

UNLV now will wait to see where it is sent for the NCAA regionals.

• UNLV MEN'S TENNIS -- At Air Force Academy, Colo., the Rebels upended No. 74 BYU 4-1 to win the Mountain West Conference team title and earn a berth in the NCAA regionals for the first time since 1999.

UNLV (13-13) dropped the doubles point, losing two of three matches, but the Rebels bounced back to win four of the five completed singles matches to claim the victory.

Elliot Wronski, ranked 71st, beat James Ludlow 7-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Slavko Bijelica beat Dominik Kaufhold 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2, Brett Hunter beat Jonathan Sanchez 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4, and Luca Barlocchi beat Cale Planck 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.

• UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS -- At Air Force Academy, Colo., the Rebels lost to BYU 4-0 in the Mountain West Conference final and now must hope for an at-large berth to an NCAA regional.

UNLV, ranked 56th, lost the doubles point for the first time in its last 13 matches, and the No. 31 Cougars then posted three singles wins, with the remaining three matches halted after BYU clinched the win.

The Rebels' Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva, ranked 20th in doubles, lost 8-3 to Jenny Miccoli and Anastasia Surkova. Surkova then beat Gantcheva 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and the Cougars also won at Nos. 2 and 5 singles.

• UNLV BASEBALL -- The Rebels gave up four runs in the eighth inning, helping Utah to a 10-6 victory at Wilson Stadium.

UNLV (14-30, 3-10 Mountain West) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead after six innings.

Xavier Scruggs had an RBI double for UNLV, and Keith Smith had a two-run double.

• UNLV SOFTBALL -- The Rebels lost to New Mexico 5-4 at Eller Media Stadium.

UNLV (32-24, 7-5 Mountain West), which rallied from a 4-0 deficit, got a Bri Bernardi solo home run and an RBI double from Kelli Fangonilo.

• UNLV TRACK -- Charlotte Browning won the Section 1 final in the 800-meter run to lead the Rebels at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

Browning won in 2 minutes, 11.60 seconds. Meia Tezeno was seventh in the Section 1 100 hurdles and fifth in the long jump, Aja Evans was second in the shot put, and Ashley Patin was fifth in the Section 1 400 hurdles.

• CCSN BASEBALL -- The Community College of Southern Nevada swept a doubleheader with 13th-ranked College of Southern Idaho, winning 2-1 and 16-6 at Morse Stadium to clinch the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular-season title.

In the first game, the Coyotes (39-16, 29-11) scored both runs in the bottom of the fifth. Chase Leavitt tripled with one out and scored on Kyle Bostick's single, and Bostick later scored on an Easton Gust sacrifice.

In the second game, CCSN scored five runs in the first, then got 10 in the fifth to win on the run rule. Tyson Mehlhoff capped the 10-run outburst with a grand slam after Southern Idaho (40-15, 28-12) had tied the game at 6 in the top of the fifth.

• CCSN SOFTBALL -- At Twin Falls, Idaho, the 19th-ranked Coyotes split a doubleheader with the College of Southern Idaho, winning 7-0 and losing 8-0 to finish second to Salt Lake Community College in the Scenic West.

Somer Flores went 2-for-4 with two triples and five RBIs in the win. Kelly Griego (13-4) threw a four-hit complete game.

CCSN (30-16, 26-14) got one-hit by Stephanie Holmes in the second game.
