Another slow start

If Saturday’s effort was sluggish, tonight’s is bedridden.

UNLV leads Texas-Pan American 27-24 at halftime of its second game of the season at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The Rebels trailed several times throughout the first half, but an 8-2 run to close the half enabled them to take a lead into the locker room.

The Broncs got eight points from Nick Weiermiller and outrebounded UNLV, 23-15.

Rene Rougeau had eight points for the Rebels, but Wink Adams made just 1 of 5 shots from the field and was held to two points.

UNLV continues to struggle behind the new extended 3-point line. The Rebels made just 2 of 14 attempts from behind the arc.

Freshmen see first action

Beas Hamga and DeShawn Mitchell entered the game for UNLV in the first half.

Neither player saw any action in Saturday’s game against San Diego.

Mitchell made an immediate impact.

He got to the basket on drives twice within his first few minutes of action.

On the first one, Mitchell got a little over-anxious and missed on a reverse layup.

The second time, he finished the move and banked in a short shot on the baseline.

Not so different

Tonight is “Turn Back the Clock” night at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The Rebel Girls have the sweats and bad hair, and almost all the music being played had to be featured in one “Brat Pack” film or another.

While it makes for a pretty good theme night now and then, it has to be considered a good thing that we have moved on from the era.

Who would want to live in a decade marked by a soaring deficit and bad pop music?

Okay, so maybe times haven’t changed that much.

Work in progress

Rene Rougeau stayed after practice several times throughout the preseason working on free throws by himself.

He had changed his routine during the offseason and wanted to get in as many shots as possible in the gym.

He will likely be putting in some more work in the coming days.

Rougeau was all over the court in the first half, and got himself to the free-throw line six times.

He only made two of them, however.

Rougeau did go 3-for-4 from the field to finish the half with eight points.
