Anthony impressed by Rebels

Greg Anthony ran the point when UNLV won the NCAA championship in 1990, and now he’s calling the shots as an analyst for CBS. He watched the Rebels up close Monday night and walked away with respect for point guards Tre’Von Willis and Oscar Bellfield.

Willis scored 17 points and Bellfield 10 in UNLV’s 80-67 victory over Texas-El Paso. Willis, a redshirt sophomore who transferred from Memphis, made his first career road start. Bellfield, a freshman, played 24 minutes off the bench and did all of his scoring in the second half.

“What’s impressive is winning this game on the road with two new point guards,” said Anthony, who called the game for CBS College Sports.

The Rebels improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

“It does the heart good to see the program doing well,” Anthony said.

McRibs and a happy Thanksgiving

Willis was thrilled after UNLV won its first road game of the season.

“It’s going to make the plane ride home and Thanksgiving more enjoyable,” he said.

Most people prefer turkey for Thanksgiving. But who needs dry turkey when the wildly popular McRib sandwich is on the menu at McDonalds? The McRib has been mysteriously absent in Las Vegas — however, the world’s finest sandwich is making a special appearance in El Paso.

For those unfamiliar with the rare delicacy, the McRib is a slice of filet mignon covered in barbeque sauce. A McRib meal sells for $4.37 but McDonalds could sell it for $40.37 and easily get away with it.

The McRib is so popular there are countless Websites dedicated to it. The McRib was honored in an episode of The Simpson’s when Homer Simpson got addicted to the sandwich and followed the Ribwich Tour with a bunch of hippie ribheads.

Here’s an excerpt from a McRib site: “The McRib is the most popular limited-time offer in the fast-food industry. The sandwich has a cult following. Some people love it so much, they travel from state to state just to find a McDonald’s restaurant with the McRib in stock.”

Willis shouldering a slight burden

As a sophomore in high school, Willis separated his right shoulder. He did it again last week, and had ice strapped on his shoulder after Monday’s game. He said it’s a slight separation and his condition is improving, but he also said the injury has hindered his shooting.

Willis shot 5-for-24 from the field and 8-for-15 on free throws in the Rebels’ first four games. He made 4 of 9 field goals and 7 of 9 free throws against the Miners.

“I’m getting treatment every day and my shoulder is definitely getting better,” he said

Adams is big in Texas

Senior guard Wink Adams grew up in Houston, so every game in his home state means a little more to him.

“I haven’t lost yet in Texas,” Adams said after scoring 20 points against UTEP.

In his UNLV career, Adams is 6-0 in Texas. He’s 3-0 at Texas Christian and also won at Houston and Texas Tech during his sophomore season.
