Anthony to sit out due to concussion

ELY — UNLV senior wide receiver Rodelin Anthony was more seriously injured Sunday than initially believed, and he will miss at least a week because of a concussion.

Anthony took a hard shot from sophomore cornerback Kenny Brown, but returned for a two-minute drill to catch four passes for 65 yards in two drives.

"We didn't know it was a concussion until he started to feel a little woozy last night," coach Mike Sanford said.

Anthony was coherent today, but extra precaution is being taken with a head injury.

"(The trainers) are just trying to make sure it doesn't affect me in the long run," Anthony said.

Anthony was going through a no-tackling drill when Brown leveled him. Senior wide receiver Jerriman Robinson immediately yelled at Brown, and Sanford told Brown to go to the sideline.

"I really wanted to get up and sock him," Anthony said of Brown. "I wanted to make sure I had a chance to get the ball and go right at him. Instincts."

With Brown no longer on the field, Anthony didn't get that chance. But he said Brown apologized to him on the sideline and there were no hard feelings.

Anthony did appreciate Robinson coming to his defense.

"It means a lot to me really," Anthony said. "I appreciate Jerriman. Jerriman and I have gotten awfully close. The receivers are all awfully close. We've been around each other for so long. It just shows the bond that we have. Vice versa, I'd probably be the exact same way toward the person if they did (that) to Jerriman. That's just how it is. We've developed that throughout the years, and that's what wins ballgames. It really does."

REST OF THE INJURY REPORT

Two wide receivers, Ryan Wolfe (stomach illness) and sophomore Phillip Payne (knee), returned to practice. But freshman wide receiver Mark Barefield aggravated a sprained right shoulder, but was expected to be OK.

Freshman offensive lineman Doug Zismann will miss at least a week because of a concussion.

MAKING AN IMPRESSION

As freshman tailback Bradley Randle was being interviewed by a reporter, Sanford yelled out, "He had his best day as a Rebel."

Running behind the second-team offensive line, which has struggled this camp, the highly rated back had two 3-yard gains when little room appeared to be there.

The most impressive run, though, was junior tailback Channing Trotter's 12-yard run, moving the pile the last five yards and losing his helmet. Also, senior tailback Chris Brogdon had a 13-yard gain, carrying junior safety Travis Dixon the last four yards.

WEARING BLACK

The black jerseys, which are awarded to the top practice performers from the previous day's practice, went to junior quarterback Omar Clayton and senior linebacker/defensive end Jason Beauchamp.

The other nominees were Trotter and Anthony on offense and junior end Preston Brooks and junior safety Calvin Randleman on defense.
