Local colleges: UNLV men’s tennis notches win over Northern Arizona

The UNLV men's tennis team beat Northern Arizona 5-2 on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
UNLV took the doubles point, winning the two completed matches, then won four of the six singles matches.
Ace Matias led the Rebels (2-0) with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Pat Schimmelbauer at No. 2. Bernard Schoeman (No. 4), Johannes Markel (No. 5) and Carlos Di Laura (No. 6) also won in straight sets.
■ UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS - The Rebels lost their season opener to Saint Mary's 5-2 in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament at Berkeley, Calif.
UNLV took two of three doubles matches to go up 1-0, but the Gaels claimed five of six in singles play. Lucia Batta netted the Rebels' lone singles win, 6-2, 6-2 over Catherine Isip at No. 2.
■ CSN BASEBALL - The College of Southern Nevada finished off its season-opening weekend with a 7-6 loss to Cochise (Ariz.) College on Sunday at Morse Stadium.
CSN (2-2) scored twice in the eighth inning to pull within 6-5, but couldn't complete the rally as each team scored once in the ninth. Cochise (3-1) got the winning run when Zach Rodgers scored on a throwing error with two outs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Evan Van Hoosier belted a one-out solo homer for the Coyotes. Van Hoosier finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
■ CSN SOFTBALL - CSN split two games to wrap up its season-opening weekend, beating Pima (Ariz.) Community College 7-4 in eight innings before losing to Chipola (Fla.) College 11-3 at the Russell Road Recreation Complex. The Coyotes moved to 4-1.
