Florida Atlantic upsets UNLV’s stumbling softball team

The 18th-ranked UNLV softball team completed a rough weekend at the Palm Springs Classic with another loss, falling to Florida Atlantic 10-6 on Sunday in Cathedral City, Calif.

The Rebels, who entered the tournament on a nine-game unbeaten streak to break into the top 25 in two polls, dropped five of six games to fall to 10-6-1.

The Owls (6-9) scored six runs in the fifth inning to turn a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 lead. Lauren Crandall and Brittany Walker each had two-run singles, and two runs scored on errors.

UNLV's Brittany Meade had an RBI single in the third inning and a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Jaci Hull went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Rosa Ordaz was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Traci Odegard, who came on in relief after Stephanie Bregante got one out and allowed a double to open the fifth, took the loss. In 2 2/3 innings, Odegard allowed seven runs (three earned), with one walk and two strikeouts.

• WOMEN'S TENNIS -- UNLV, ranked 38th, routed No. 32 Florida International 6-1 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels (7-3) took two of three doubles matches to earn the first point, then won five of six singles matches.

Elena Gantcheva, ranked 23rd, rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 86 Liset Brito at No. 1 singles to lead UNLV. Nikol Dimitrova (No. 4) and Anna Maskaljun (No. 5) also won in straight sets.

Katy Williams and Adrienn Hidvegi posted wins for UNLV at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, respectively.

• BASEBALL -- UNLV erased a 7-3 deficit with a two-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth to beat Central Michigan 9-7 at Wilson Stadium.

Rance Roundy went 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs, including a three-run triple in the sixth inning. Michael Brenly went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Rebels (2-1).

Reliever Adam Moser got the win, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings, and Marc Baca worked the ninth inning to get the save.
