Iodence goes distance as Rebels baseball rises to 7-1

UNLV's baseball team continued its strong start under new coach Tim Chambers, beating Central Michigan 5-2 at Wilson Stadium on Sunday to win three of four games in the weekend series.
Tyler Iodence (2-0) pitched a six-hit complete game with four strikeouts and one walk. Rance Roundy went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs.
The Rebels (7-1) never trailed, pulling away in the late innings. Trent Cook's RBI single made it 4-2 in the seventh, and Trevor Kirk's suicide squeeze in the eighth added an insurance run.
After two games at Texas Tech and three at UNR, the Rebels return home March 8 to play Arizona at 6:05 p.m.
■ MEN'S GOLF -- At Palm Desert, Calif., co-medalist Kevin Penner led UNLV to a second-place finish in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
The Rebels shot 5-over-par 293 in the second round and 6-over 294 in the final round to finish at 20-over 884, five strokes behind winner Texas A&M.
Penner earned his first collegiate title, shooting 3-under 69 in the second round and 2-over 74 in the third for a 3-under 213 total to tie Santa Clara's Scott Travers. Fellow Rebels Blake Biddle (4-over 220, tie for seventh) and Derek Ernst (221, tie for ninth) also finished in the top 10 at the 20-team event.
■ MEN'S TENNIS -- UNLV beat Arkansas 4-2 at Fertitta Tennis Complex for its second win of the season over the Razorbacks, whom the Rebels beat 5-2 indoors in Fayetteville, Ark., on Jan. 28.
The Rebels (10-5) took the two completed doubles matches, then got three singles victories. Mehdi Bouras topped Matt Hogan 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Rene Ruegamer (No. 3) and Alex Bull (No. 4) posted three-set victories.
■ SOFTBALL -- At Riverside, Calif., UNLV beat UC Riverside 10-2 to complete play in the Amy S. Harrison Classic.
Starting pitcher Jessica O'Connor paced the Rebels, allowing two runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, with five strikeouts and one walk.
Pauline Monreal went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for the Rebels (7-6). Paige Emerson and Stefany Valentnio each had three hits and an RBI, and Heather Harrison had a solo homer.
