Local colleges roundup: UNLV baseball tops Air Force in extras, 11-10

Freshman Collin Yelich’s walk-off single in the 10th inning plated Joey Swanner to give the UNLV baseball team an 11-10 victory over Air Force on Saturday at Wilson Stadium.

Swanner reached on a one-out triple to set up the game-winner.

The game featured six lead changes. The Rebels (19-8, 4-4 Mountain West) scored three in the bottom of the seventh to seemingly take control at 9-6, but the Falcons (8-17, 2-4) answered with four in the top of the eighth to retake the lead.

Pinch runner Cody Howard scored on a throwing error in the eighth to tie the game again.

UNLV’s Brandon Bayardi hit his fifth home run of the year in the fifth inning.

Kenny Oakley (3-1) pitched the final two innings to get the win.

UNLV goes for the series sweep at 1:05 p.m. today.

■ SOFTBALL — Colorado State (17-14, 3-0 Mountain West) finished off a sweep of its series with UNLV (14-21, 0-3) with a 15-7 victory in five innings at Fort Collins, Colo.

Tayler Aleman and Samantha Juarez each had two hits for the Rebels.

UNLV next hosts Fresno State in a three-game series starting Friday.

■ SWIMMING — Balint Batka finished 14th in the 200 butterfly to help UNLV finish tied for 29th as a team in the NCAA swimming and diving championships at Indianapolis.

The Rebels’ 400 freestyle relay team was 19th, and David Szele and Giacomo Gremizzi took 37th and 40th, respectively, in the 200 breaststroke.

Michigan won the overall title, its first since 1995.

■ TENNIS — Johannes Markel rallied to beat Matt Thomson 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 and give the UNLV men (13-4) a 4-3 victory over Cal Poly (8-7) at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels are 12-0 at home this season.

UNLV hosts San Diego State at 11 a.m. today.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

■ BASEBALL — Isaac Shim hit a grand slam to help No. 4-ranked CSN (28-9, 16-4) earn a 9-5 victory and a split of its doubleheader with Colorado Northwestern Community College (4-33, 3-21) at Rangely, Colo.

Colorado Northwestern scored two runs on passed balls in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun the Coyotes 6-5 in the first game.

Sean McCracken, Thomas Pannone, Cody Clark and Morgan Stotts all hit home runs in the two games for CSN.

■ SOFTBALL — No. 6 College of Southern Idaho (32-6, 26-2) swept CSN (22-21, 15-17) in a doubleheader at the Russell Road Recreation Complex, 8-4 and 11-2 in five innings.

Tiffani Taylor had a solo home run for CSN.
