It’s time for things to turn around

This season it feels like we have been snakebitten a little bit. We have lost 10 games by one run and we’ve been walked off five times. I think there are two ways we could look at it.

Retiring Jim Reitz has boat to float after 35 years at UNLV

He still gets up at 5:30 a.m., only now there’s not much to do. It’ll probably take a couple more weeks to remove all the stuff from his office, because one accumulates a lot of office stuff over 35 years as coach.

UNLV’s Finkelstein named Mountain West women’s golfer of year

UNLV senior Dana Finkelstein was named the Mountain West women’s golfer of the year for the third straight season. Finkelstein, whose scoring average of 71.5 this season is the lowest in program history, posted two wins and six top-five finishes.

Montes’ suicide squeeze bunt lifts struggling UNLV past New Mexico

Montes couldn’t have put down a better suicide squeeze than if he had tossed the ball, easily scoring Hernandez with the winning run to give UNLV a 3-2, 10-inning victory. The bunt was so good that Lobos pitcher Alex Estrella didn’t even bother to try to get an out.

Confidence makes a big difference on the field

Last week I think we got our swagger back a little bit. We had a big win over Arizona State, which I talked about in my last post, and then we took that momentum on the road and won our series over Ohio State.

Jim Reitz, dean of UNLV coaches, to retire

Jim Reitz is retiring after heading the UNLV swimming and diving program for 35 seasons. Reitz outlasted eight basketball coaches and eight football coaches. He led his teams to 14 conference championships and produced numerous All-Americans and Olympic swimmers.

Squier’s sacrifice fly lifts UNLV to 3-2 baseball win at Ohio State

Payton Squier’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly brought home the decisive run Saturday in UNLV’s 3-2 win over Ohio State in a nonconference baseball game in Columbus, Ohio. Rebels starter D.J. Myers held Ohio State to two runs on six hits and one walk and struck out six in 6 1/3 innings.

Ohio State rallies for 6-5 baseball victory over UNLV

Troy Kuhn’s one-out RBI single in the ninth inning sent Ohio State to a 6-5 victory over UNLV in a nonconference baseball game Friday in Columbus, Ohio. The Rebels scored single runs in each of the first five innings and led 5-2 after five.

Back on the road after a wild, Wednesday morning win

We picked up a huge win over No. 5 Arizona State this week and that was really good for our guys. The game was a little weird as we were scheduled to play on Tuesday night. We got a couple innings in then, but because of a lighting issue we had to put the game on hold.
