Rebels swim to records

The UNLV men's swimming and diving team won four events Friday, setting two conference records, to extend its lead at the Mountain West Championships in Oklahoma City.

The Rebels, three-time defending MWC champions, took a 102-point lead -- 575-473 -- over second-place Wyoming.

The UNLV women won three events and set one MWC record to move into second place with 432 points, 112 behind Brigham Young, heading into the final day of the event.

The Rebels' Jonas Andersson won the 100-yard breaststroke in a conference- and school-record time of 53.46 seconds, beating the rest of the field by more than a second.

UNLV set its second MWC record of the day in the 400 medley relay, winning in 3 minutes, 13.44 seconds, topping its own previous record of 3:13.92 set in 2005. Tiger Christian, Andersson, Peter Lorring and Richard Hortness combined for the victory.

Christian won the 100 backstroke in 48.67, the second-fastest time in UNLV history. Devin Phillips was second in 48.93, the third-best time ever for a Rebel. Hortness won the 200 free in 1:36.55, the second-best time in UNLV history.

Amanda Weinbrecht, Kim Bonney, Marina Sandback and Megan Hunt-Higgins combined to win the 400 medley relay for the UNLV women, setting a conference-record time of 3:41.63, which beat the old mark by more than a second.

Bonney won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.22, setting a UNLV record, and Hunt-Higgins won the 100 backstroke in 54.68.

• UNLV BASEBALL -- At Wilson Stadium, the Rebels had 13 hits in an 11-8 win over Maine.

Rance Roundy led UNLV (3-3) with three hits, and Jesse Wight drove in three runs.

Sophomore Matt Hutchison (1-1) allowed four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win.

Steve Rinaudo and Bryan Resnick each had two hits and scored twice for the Rebels, who scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead.

• UNLV TRACK AND FIELD -- At Colorado Springs, Colo., the Rebels finished the first day of the Mountain West Indoor Championships tied for eighth place. UNLV was led by Monique Humphries, who set a school record with a weight throw of 59 feet, 8 inches to earn a second-place finish.

• CSN BASEBALL -- At Morse Stadium, the Coyotes lost two games to Western Nevada College, 6-1 and 5-2.

Spring Valley High School graduate Jose Barajas pitched two scoreless innings in the first game to earn the victory.

Colby Shreve had two of CSN's four hits in the opener.

• CSN SOFTBALL -- At Russell Road Recreation Complex, the Coyotes split a doubleheader with College of Southern Idaho, losing 3-2 before gaining a 6-0 victory.

Christina Jones pitched a shutout for CSN in the second game, and Michelle Ralston was 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Amy Aicher was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Coyotes in the first game.
