UNLV doubles squad falls short in Mountain Regional final

UNLV men's tennis players Bernard Schoeman and Ace Matias had their strong doubles run at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships end in Sunday's title match at the Darling Tennis Center.
Schoeman and Matias, who won two matches Saturday to reach the final, lost to Idaho's Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea, 8-5. Akbar and Cirstea earned a spot in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships next month in New York.
■ WOMEN'S GOLF - UNLV was in sixth after the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Stallion Mountain Golf Club. The host Rebels shot 14-over 302, 10 strokes behind co-leaders Wisconsin and Minnesota in the 18-team, three-round event.
Dana Finkelstein led UNLV, shooting 1-over 73 to stand tied for seventh individually, three shots behind leader Elizabeth Tong of Indiana.
■ WOMEN'S SOCCER - UNLV forged a 1-1 tie at Boise State in a Mountain West Conference match.
The Rebels (10-3-4, 2-1-3 MWC) took a 1-0 lead on Susie Bernal's goal in the ninth minute, and the Broncos tied it in the 50th minute off a Katy Oehring free kick. Kylie Wassell had three saves for UNLV, which has allowed just three goals in its six conference games.
■ MEN'S SOCCER - UNLV lost to Houston Baptist 4-1 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Houston.
Houston Baptist scored all its goals in the first 22 minutes. The Rebels (5-11-1, 3-4 MPSF) got their one counter on Salvador Bernal's goal in the 28th minute.
