UNLV was unable to sustain its early momentum from doubles and was eliminated 4-1 by San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West men’s tennis championships Thursday in Fresno, Calif.
The Rebels, who were the No. 6 seed, had won two of the three matches and taking the single point from doubles as the No. 1 team of Denys Pume and Ace Matias won their match, 8-7 (2) as did the No. 3 team of Jakob Amilon and Dimitar Petrov, 8-5. But the third-seeded Aztecs dominated in singles, winning four of the six matches.
UNLV finished its season 13-11. San Diego State (12-11) will meet No. 2 New Mexico in Saturday’s semifinals. The other semifinal has No. 1 Boise State meeting No. 4 UNR.
UNLV did place three singles players — Matias, Pume and Tamas Batyi — on the All-Mountain West squad. And Matias-Pume also were named All-Mountain West in doubles.
