UNLV roundup: Oliveto’s no-hitter propels Rebel softball past UMass

Amanda Oliveto threw a no-hitter to lead the UNLV softball team to a 5-0 victory over Massachusetts on Sunday to wrap up play in the San Diego Classic II tournament. Oliveto struck out five, with one walk and one hit batter.

Tayler Van Acker went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Rebels (13-17), and Alyssa Cordova was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

■ BASEBALL — No. 21 UNLV scored three runs in the first inning, then allowed New Mexico to score the next 12 runs in a 12-7 Mountain West loss at Wilson Stadium.

Mark Shannon had a one-out RBI single in the first for the Rebels (15-5, 1-2), and with two outs, Erik VanMeetren hit a two-run single. But the Lobos (8-10, 2-1) rebounded with three four-run innings, in the third, fifth and sixth, en route to winning the three-game series, 2-1.

D.J. Peterson did the bulk of the damage for New Mexico, going 3-for-5 with two homers — a three-run shot in the third inning and a grand slam in the sixth. Shannon had an RBI triple in the sixth for the Rebels.

■ MEN’S GOLF — At Tucson, Ariz., UNLV shot 5-over 293 in the final round of the National Invitational Tournament, taking ninth in the 16-team field that included five top-20 teams. The Rebels had a 5-over 869 total, 25 strokes behind winner New Mexico’s 20-under 844.

Kurt Kitayama shot 2-under 70 to pace UNLV, tying for 22nd at even-par 216. Texas Christian’s Julien Brun struggled to a 75 but still won the individual title at 8-under 208.
