UNLV wins second game to salvage baseball split at San Jose State

Andrew Yazdanbakhsh and Nick Rodriguez each went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead UNLV to a 9-3 win over San Jose State, helping the Rebels claim a split of their Mountain West doubleheader Friday in San Jose, Calif.

UNLV was limited to four hits in losing the first game 3-0, halting the Spartans’ six-game losing streak.

Morgan Stotts had two doubles in the second game and one in the first game for the Rebels (23-29, 9-20), who ended their five-game losing streak with the Game 2 victory.

A.J. VanMeetren and Austin Anderson each drove in two runs for UNLV, which had a 14-7 edge in hits in the second game.

Ben Wright (1-2) won Game 2, holding San Jose State (13-42, 6-23) to no earned runs on three hits in two walks and striking out three in five innings. Joey Lauria pitched the next three innings, giving up no runs on three hits and striking out six.

Kalei Contrades (4-9) shut out UNLV on two hits and two walks and struck out five in five innings in Game 1.

Andre Mercurio went 6-for-9 with two RBIs and three stolen bases in the two games for the Spartans.
