UNLV women’s golf places eighth in season opener

The UNLV women's golf team took eighth at the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday, shooting 10-over-par 302 in the final round for a 32-over 908 total.

Therese Koelbaek, who had a two-stroke lead after shooing 70 in each of the first two rounds, shot 2-over 75 to finish tied for third at 4-under 215. Oregon's Erica Omlid (69) won at 8-under 211, helping the Ducks claim the team title at 5-over 881, two shots ahead of Ohio State.

Alejandra Guacaneme shot 74 Saturday to finish at 5-over 224 and in 23rd place. Bethany Glassford (75) and Kristen Schelling (78) rounded out the Rebels' team score in the debut of coach Amy Bush, who was promoted after Missy Ringler left the program following a successful eight-year run.

■ VOLLEYBALL -- The Rebels dropped both their matches to finish the UNLV Classic at Cox Pavilion, losing to San Jose State and Xavier.

UNLV took the first two games against Xavier before the Musketeers rallied to win, 18-25, 15-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-10. Kelsey Keeler had 16 kills and 12 digs for the Rebels (3-9), and Candice Thomas had 14 kills to make the all-tournament team.

In their opener, the Rebels lost to San Jose State, 25-19, 25-23, 16-25, 25-21. Keeler paced UNLV with 15 digs and 12 kills, and Thomas had 14 kills.

■ CROSS COUNTRY -- Lauren Petersen led the Rebels to a 12th-place finish in the 24-team UC Riverside Invitational in Riverside, Calif.

Petersen covered the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 32.9 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in school history, to take 11th in the field of 179 runners. Loyola Marymount's Tara Edmann won in 16:45.4, and Arkansas took the team title with 30 points.

UNLV finished with 359 points.

■ MEN'S TENNIS -- Alex Bull was the lone Rebel to win in the second round of the UNLV Fall Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Bull beat Fresno State's Hugo Verdi Fortin 6-4, 6-3 to reach today's final round.
