Rebels outclassed in first half

FORT WORTH, Texas — UNLV is behind 20-0 to No. 8 Texas Christian at halftime, but it could've been worse.

The Horned Frogs lost two fumbles, but UNLV failed to take advantage of either takeaway.

The numbers might be more one-sided than the score. TCU has outgained the Rebels 339 yards to 101 and has 12 first downs to UNLV's three.

Perhaps most astounding, the Frogs have rushed for 222 yards on 20 carries, spreading out the attempts among several rushers. Quarterback Andy Dalton is 5 of 9 for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Both of TCU's TDs came on long gains — a 75-yard pass from Dalton to wide receiver Antoine Hicks and a 59-yard run by tailback Ed Wesley.

On the other side, Rebels quarterback Omar Clayton has completed 5 of 12 passes for 28 yards. LOOKING AHEAD

Barring an incredible comeback, UNLV will have to win out to become bowl eligible. The Rebels have a winnable home game next Saturday against Colorado State, but then a difficult road test at Air Force. After taking a week off, they end the regular season with a home game against San Diego State.

The chances obviously are not good, but those teams aren't exactly in TCU's class, either.

COMMENTARY FROM THE FIELD

Referee Pete Gautreau inadvertently had his microphone on for one play in the first quarter, and three loud F-bombs and another curse word could be heard. Whether those actually came from the ref is unknown, but if not, it was a powerful microphone.

ODDS AND ENDS

UNLV junior Mike Grant started at cornerback in place of sophomore Deante Purvis. ... Rebels wide receiver Ryan Wolfe moved into 13th on the NCAA's career list with 272 receptions. ... UNLV wide receiver Rodelin Anthony entered the game in the second quarter after missing the two previous weeks with an ankle injury.
