TCU’s defense shines in victory

FORT WORTH, Texas — UNLV football coach Mike Sanford said No. 8 Texas Christian deserved its ranking, and it was tough to argue after today.

The vaunted Horned Frogs' defense shut down and shut out the Rebels, winning 41-0 at Amon Carter Stadium.

“I don’t remember ever in my career playing against as good a defense as that,” Sanford said.

UNLV reached the Frogs’ territory only four times and never advanced past TCU’s 34-yard line.

It also was the first time the Rebels were shut out since a 7-0 home loss to San Diego State on Nov. 8, 2003. UNLV’s seven first downs were its fewest since picking up six two years ago at TCU. The Rebels passed for 42 yards, their lowest total since gaining 40 against Arkansas in Little Rock in 2001. TCU rushed for 390 yards, second for a UNLV opponent this season only to UNR’s 559 on Oct. 3.

STAYING ALIVE

UNLV remains in contention for a potential bowl berth, but must win its final three games to become eligible.

The Rebels must beat Colorado State at home next Saturday, win at Air Force on Nov. 14 and defeat San Diego State at home on Nov. 28.

“I think that we’re still very focused,” UNLV defensive end/linebacker Jason Beauchamp said. “The seniors (including) myself, we’re going to force guys to work. I think there is definitely a chance we can run the table these last three games.”

SHUTTING OUT HUGHES

TCU All-America defensive end Jerry Hughes entered this game leading the Mountain West Conference with nine sacks, but had none against the Rebels. He also was limited to five tackles and a quarterback hit.

“My whole plan coming in here was to keep the quarterback clean,” said tackle Evan Marchal, who blocked Hughes. “I think we did a pretty good job of that today.”

A real good job. The Horned Frogs, who had a league-high 26 sacks, failed to record one.

“I think our offensive line did a nice job,” coach Mike Sanford said. “I believe Evan Marchal and our entire offensive line competed and fought and played hard.”
