UNLV 43, Pittsburg State 26 (halftime)

Junior guard Kendall Wallace scored eight points and freshman guard Justin Hawkins had seven to help UNLV take a 43-26 halftime lead over Pittsburg State tonight in the Rebels’ regular-season opener at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The Gorillas, a Division II team from Kansas, led for most of the opening 10 minutes. It was a rough start for the Rebels, who missed five of their first six shots and trailed 8-3 five minutes into the game.

Senior guard Steve Jones made a 3-pointer from the corner as UNLV surged ahead 25-19 with 6:32 left. Jones scored six points.
