Ex-Wyoming coach Schroyer to join UNLV staff

Out of work since being fired at Wyoming, Heath Schroyer is back in business as the second assistant hired by new UNLV basketball coach Dave Rice.

An announcement confirming Schroyer's addition to Rice's staff is expected to be made today after Schroyer signs his contract, a source said.

Rice, introduced as Rebels coach on April 11, said he was seeking at least one assistant with head coaching experience, and Schroyer, 39, fits the description. He was fired Feb. 7 in the midst of his fourth year as Cowboys coach.

Schroyer went 49-68 at Wyoming, including 16-41 in the Mountain West Conference. He had a contract through the 2013-14 season and is set to receive $160,000 per year from Wyoming for the remaining three years.

The Cowboys were weak defensively under Schroyer, but he was able to recruit talented players such as Desmar Jackson and Afam Muojeke to Laramie.

Schroyer was 30 when he was hired as Portland State's head coach in 2002. He also was an assistant at Brigham Young and Fresno State.

Justin Hutson, a highly regarded defensive coach and recruiter from San Diego State, was the first assistant hired by Rice, who still can add one full-time coach and a director of basketball operations.

Former Rebels star Stacey Augmon, an assistant with the Denver Nuggets, is likely to join UNLV's staff after the Nuggets are finished in the NBA playoffs..
