Lady Rebels can’t overcome poor shooting in second half

Cold second-half shooting was too much for the UNLV women’s basketball team to overcome Saturday night in a 93-84 loss to Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah.

The Lady Rebels (3-6) led for all but two of the first 36 minutes and had their highest-scoring first half of the season en route to a 50-44 intermission lead. However, after shooting 50 percent in the first 20 minutes, UNLV sank to 26.8 percent (11 of 41) in the second half.

Desiree Jackson and Marquelle Funk scored 24 points apiece for the Thunderbirds (5-1), who closed the game on a 15-5 run. Southern Utah shot 78.6 percent (33 of 42) on free throws, including a 24-for-26 showing in the second half.

Alana Cesarz and Danielle Miller scored 16 points each for the Lady Rebels, who had a 47-46 edge in rebounds but shot 56.8 percent (25 of 44) on free throws.
