Marshall suspended for NCAA violation as Rebels prepare for opener

UNLV guard Anthony Marshall was suspended Monday for the Rebels' season opener against Division II Grand Canyon on Friday because of a self-reported secondary violation of an NCAA rule limiting summer competition.
Marshall, a 6-foot-3-inch junior who prepped at Mojave High, participated in one game in a second league during the summer this year, making him ineligible for one regular-season UNLV game. The NCAA mandated that it be the first regular-season game.
Division I players are required to limit their competition during the summer to one league. UNLV made an appeal to the NCAA, which was denied.
"It's disappointing to have to sit out a game," Marshall said in a school statement. "It was an honest mistake, but I have to take responsibility for it."
Marshall had a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds last week in a the Rebels' 58-50 exhibition win over Washburn. He played in all 33 games last season, averaging 9.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals.
Senior swingman Chace Stanback and sophomore forward Carlos Lopez also will also be out of action Friday, leaving the Rebels with only seven scholarship players against Grand Canyon.
Stanback was suspended for the first game in September after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of marijuana, and Lopez suffered a sprained ankle last week in practice.
