Who’s UNLV’s top player? Larry Johnson

Forward Larry Johnson, a two-time All-American, was named UNLV’s No. 1 player on 21 of 25 ballots cast in R-J voting for the basketball program’s top 100 players.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal selected a panel of 25 voters to rank the top 100 players in UNLV basketball history. The panelists were provided with biographical information for 124 players. A first-place vote is worth 100 points. To reach a more accurate average, the highest and lowest vote for each player was deleted. The final rankings and vote totals (with first-place votes):

Sidney Green, Years: 1979 to 1983, Career highlights: Ranks No. 2 on the all-time scoring list with 2,073 points and No. 1 in rebounds with 1,276.

RANKING THE REBELS: 4 – Armon “The Hammer” Gilliam

Armon “The Hammer” Gilliam, Years: 1984 to 1987, Career highlights: The 6-foot-9-inch forward/center is seventh with 1,855 points and sixth with 890 rebounds. Only top-10 scorer who played just three seasons.

Eddie Owens, Years: 1973 to 1977, Career highlights: The Rebels’ all-time scoring leader with 2,221 points; averaged 18.8 points in 118 games.

“Fearless” Freddie Banks, Years: 1983 to 1987, Career highlights: Former Valley High star ranks No. 4 with 2,007 career points, tied for fourth in steals (184) and ranks sixth in assists (497).
