UNLV's loss at Wyoming on Saturday cost the team three spots in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls released Monday, with the Rebels dropping to 14th in the media rankings and 16th in the coaches rankings.
The Rebels (21-4) suffered a 68-66 Mountain West Conference loss at Laramie after Anthony Marshall and Mike Moser missed potential tying shots in the final five seconds. UNLV beat Colorado State 82-63 at home Wednesday.
UNLV was passed in the national rankings by Mountain West rival San Diego State, which improved to 20-3 with conference victories over Boise State and Texas Christian. The Aztecs are No. 13 in the AP poll, No. 14 in the coaches poll.
The Rebels are off until Saturday, when they host San Diego State at 1 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The top five teams in both polls were the same this week: Kentucky (23-1), Syracuse (23-1), Ohio State (20-3), Missouri (21-2) and North Carolina (20-3).
■ WOMEN'S POLL -- Baylor again is a unanimous No. 1 choice in The Associated Press women's poll, and St. Bonaventure entered the rankings for the first time ever.
The Lady Bears received every first-place vote for the 10th straight week after routing Missouri and Kansas State last week. Baylor (24-0) then routed Oklahoma on Monday night, after the poll was relased.
Notre Dame, Connecticut, Stanford and Duke rounded out the top five.
St. Bonaventure came in at No. 25. The Bonnies are 22-2, with the only losses coming to No. 12 Delaware and Villanova.
■ COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON -- Cougars coach Bobby Cremins said he was physically exhausted and that his doctor told him if he didn't stepped away from the team, he could seriously damage his long-term health.
Cremins, 64, said he wanted to clear up any misconceptions about his health, visit with players and return the focus to basketball. Cremins took an indefinite leave of absence Jan. 27.
He said he felt uneasy for a month before visiting his doctor. The prognosis was that Cremins was worn out, and his doctor suggested he take a break.
■ ALABAMA -- Crimson Tide forward Tony Mitchell was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.
Coach Anthony Grant said the suspension came about because of an accumulation of things. He didn't elaborate but said the decision was made after Saturday double-overtime win over Mississippi.
It was the first game this season that Mitchell didn't start. He scored 14 points in 31 minutes off the bench.
Mitchell is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.1 points and 7.0 rebounds.
