Report: Dejean-Jones left UNLV after threat from teammate

Former UNLV guard Bryce Dejean-Jones left the program last year after he was threatened with gun violence by a teammate, according to a story in the Ames (Iowa) Tribune.

Dejean-Jones, a senior who is finishing his career at Iowa State, reflected on a collegiate run that began at Southern California and included a three-year stint at UNLV.

His recollection of his final days as a Rebel has generated the most attention in Las Vegas.

Dejean-Jones told reporter Travis Hines that he was confronted by a teammate in the locker room after UNLV’s loss to San Diego State in the 2014 Mountain West tournament.

Dejean-Jones said the teammate, whom he did not name, told him, “I should have shot you when I had the chance.”

After the incident, Dejean-Jones said the coaches told the teammate to leave the locker room. He was surprised by the lack of further punishment.

“I’m like, ‘The guy just said out loud he should have shot me, and you’re going to let him leave the locker room? I’m leaving, too. I’m not going to walk out to an ambush,’ ” Dejean-Jones told the paper.

When asked if Dejean-Jones’ account of the story was true, UNLV coach Dave Rice said, “Not to my knowledge. I appreciate Bryce’s contributions here and wish him well at Iowa State.”

Dejean-Jones was suspended for the 2014 regular-season finale, a 76-72 loss at UNR, for conduct detrimental to the team.
