UNLV falls to San Diego State 94-77 in another rout
SAN DIEGO — This is one of America’s most beautiful cities, with its rolling hills and welcoming beaches drawing visitors from all over the world.
It’s a place UNLV should avoid.
Saturday’s 94-77 Mountain West loss was the Rebels’ sixth in a row at Viejas Arena and 10th in 11 visits here.
The Aztecs (11-8, 3-3 MW) led from the beginning and got another strong game from Jalen McDaniels, who had 30 points and 13 rebounds and made a 3-pointer from 30 feet just before the final buzzer.
“That was definitely a slap in the face,” UNLV guard Kris Clyburn said. “We’ll see San Diego when they get to UNLV.”
The teams meet Feb. 23 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
“He’ll have to pay for that shot when we get to Vegas,” Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher said of McDaniels. “They’ll remember it. It’s a shot he took and made, and now he’s going to have to answer the call when we go there. Because they won’t forget. And I wouldn’t forget, either.”
The shot, though, was the least of the problems for the Rebels (11-8, 5-2), who allowed 70.8 percent shooting in the second half and 56.1 percent for the game.
Then they had to bus back to Las Vegas after the game. Coach Marvin Menzies said he was told someone running from police Friday night broke into the team plane and damaged it.
“I guess that adds insult to injury, but that’s the way it work sometimes in life,” Menzies said. “You get hit with one curveball and another one comes. We’ll rally. We’ll get the guys together.”
