Flair thumbing record book

UNLV senior wide receiver Casey Flair inched closer to the Rebels' career records for receptions and receiving yards Saturday, and he also closed in on the school mark for consecutive games with a catch.

Flair, who finished with five receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown in UNLV's 49-27 loss to UNR at Sam Boyd Stadium, has made a catch in 40 consecutive games.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 205-pounder from Anchorage, Alaska, is one game shy of tying the school-record streak by Earvin Johnson, who made a reception in 41 straight games from 2001 to 2004.

Flair also has the second-longest active streak in the country behind Rice's Jarett Dillard, who extended his run to 41 straight Saturday with a catch in the Owls' 77-20 romp over North Texas.

Flair is third on the Rebels' career receptions list, with 175, behind Johnson (183) and Damon Williams (187).

He is ninth in UNLV career receiving yards with 2,103. Johnson leads with 2,604 yards and Williams is second with 2,558.

Wideout Ryan Wolfe, who had eight catches for 167 yards Saturday, also is rising in the UNLV career record books. The 6-2 junior is tied for fifth in receptions with 158, and eighth in receiving yards with 2,169.

• CLAYTON'S STREAK SNAPPED -- UNLV sophomore quarterback Omar Clayton didn't commit a turnover in the first four games of the season and carried a school-record streak of 139 pass attempts without throwing an interception into Saturday's loss to UNR.

But after completing 18 of his first 34 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns to run his streak to 173 pass attempts, Clayton finally was intercepted by UNR's Mo Harvey with 10:09 remaining.

Before throwing his first pick, Clayton had the second-longest active streak in the country behind Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, who has gone 183 pass attempts without an interception.

The Rebels' previous record of 109 pass attempts without a pick was set by Jared Brown in 1994.

• SHORT OF SELLOUT -- The attendance Saturday was 33,078, the eighth-largest crowd ever to watch the Rebels at Sam Boyd Stadium and UNLV's biggest home crowd of the season. The Rebels had averaged just over 22,000 in their first two home games.

It also was the third-largest crowd ever to see a Battle for the Fremont Cannon in Nevada. Only the sellout crowd of 37,179 here in 2006 and a stadium-record crowd of 33,391 at Reno's Mackay Stadium in 1995 were bigger.

• ONE-MAN SHOW -- UNR sophomore quarterback Colin Kaepernick rushed for 240 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 176 yards and two scores.

He became the first UNLV opponent to rush for at least 200 yards since Iowa State's Darren Davis gained 208 on Sept. 18, 1999.

• FAR FROM RECORD -- UNR punter Brad Langley launched a 77-yard punt for the Wolf Pack in the first half, but the prodigious punt wasn't even the longest in school history.

UNR's Pat Brady set an NCAA Division I record in 1950 when he had a 99-yard punt against Loyola Marymount.

• BROTHERS IN LEGS -- The Jaekle brothers -- UNR senior kicker Brett and UNLV sophomore kicker Ben, both Bonanza High graduates -- faced each other for the second time and tied each other with seven points apiece.

Ben kicked two field goals in the first half, a 47-yarder in the first quarter and a 52-yarder in the final minute for the sixth longest in UNLV history. He also added one PAT. Brett scored all of his seven points on PATs.
