Hauck looking forward to challenging schedule

UNLV's football team will play a schedule that includes an unusual two byes and stretches into December, but coach Bobby Hauck was more concerned about other parts of it.

“Frankly, the two open dates aren’t the hard part,” Hauck said. “It’s playing three top-10 teams and going on the road seven times. Those are the issues we’ve got to address.”

The Rebels open Sept. 3 at Wisconsin, host Boise State on Nov. 5 and play the finale at TCU. TCU finished last season ranked second, Wisconsin seventh and Boise State ninth.

Plus, the Rebels play at rival UNR, which was 11th, on Oct. 8.

FIRST HITS

The Rebels went into pads today for the first time this spring session.

"It's got to be better tomorrow," Hauck said. "We had a physical day today. We looked rusty. All those things we've got to get better at got exposed today. They didn't just magically change when we were off the field the last 2 1/2 months, so we have a lot of work to do. But I love the way everybody's trying to get better. We've got a lot of young guys I think understand what needs to be done this summer. We have a long way to go, but the effort level's there. That's kind of where it starts. If the effort is there, then you've got a chance."
