QBs expected to battle through spring

Sophomore Caleb Herring maintained his hold on the No. 1 spot at quarterback as UNLV reached the midway point of spring football practices, but that could change when the team returns from spring break.

Coach Bobby Hauck said he expected to see improvement from junior college transfer Sean Reilly when the team is back at Rebel Park on March 22.

“The first eight practices were probably not a great gauge on where he’s going to be,” Hauck said. “It’s these next couple of weeks. He gets a better understanding every day. Caleb’s done a nice job. We need both those guys to come on.”

Both quarterbacks had their moments in today's scrimmage. Herring threw a touchdown pass and ran for another, and Reilly threw two TDs.

NO PAYNE

Senior wide receiver Phillip Payne didn’t practice because of an injured neck sustained in a car accident Wednesday.

Hauck said the injury wasn’t serious, and that Payne was expected back when the team returns.

A LITTLE QUIET

There wasn't the loud popping of pads usually associated with a scrimmage, and Hauck said there's a good reason for that.

“We’ve got to get better,” Hauck said. “We’ve got to play faster. We look a little bit like a young group that’s trying to figure it out. That’s probably what we are.”

The scrimmage was a long one, lasting more than 95 plays.
