UNLV brings in 10 junior college football players for visits this weekend

UNLV is working hard to recruit a quarterback, with offers out to at least two junior college QBs and one in high school.

One of those, Johnny Stanton of Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif., is one of 10 junior college players making official visits to UNLV this weekend.

There is familiarity between Stanton and part of the Rebels' coaching staff. He was at Nebraska for two seasons before transferring to Saddleback. UNLV offensive coordinator Barney Cotton and offensive line coach John Garrison were on the Cornhuskers' staff.

Stanton (6-foot-2, 230 pounds) completed 63.4 percent of his passes this season at Saddleback for 3,168 yards and 25 touchdowns, with 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 705 yards and 12 TDs.

Bringing in Stanton showed the Rebels' coaches aren't sitting idle to see what quarterback Richard Lagow (6-6, 240) of Cisco (Texas) College decides. Lagow visited UNLV and Indiana last month, and this weekend he will go to Colorado State.

"Decision coming very soon!" Lagow tweeted on Tuesday.

UNLV also has offered a scholarship to Armani Rogers (6-5, 200) of Hamilton High School in Los Angeles. Rogers, who once committed to California and has received scholarship offers from a handful of Pac-12 Conference schools as well as Colorado State, is expected to visit UNLV in January.

The ideal scenario for the Rebels would be to sign a junior college and high school quarterback for immediate help and the long term.

UNLV, which just completed a 3-9 season under first-year coach Tony Sanchez, could use a lot of immediate and long-term help.

This upcoming weekend is more about the near future, and in addition to Stanton, these are the players visiting — safety Mike Adams (6-3, 210) of Laney College in Oakland, Calif.; cornerback Devron Davis (6-0, 210) of Merced (Calif.) College; wide receiver Malik Dumetz (6-3, 205) of American River College in Sacramento, Calif.; tight end Tim Holt (6-3, 235) of Fullerton (Calif.) College; tight end Trevor Kanteman (6-4, 240) of Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Calif.; linebacker Jordan Kunasyzk (6-3, 230) of American River College; defensive tackle Nakita Lealao (6-4, 290) of Laney College; offensive lineman Sean Taylor (6-5, 290) of Laney College; and wide receiver Marquis Wimberly (6-2, 200) of Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Adams, Holt and Wimberly already have committed to the Rebels, who have 11 commitments overall.

Some of the more notable recruits visiting this weekend include:

* Davis reportedly has been offered scholarships by numerous Southeastern Conference schools as well as others in power conferences. He previously committed to Colorado State, and visited Michigan State on Oct. 9.

* Kanteman is a former Illinois player who caught 23 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns this season.

* Lealao also has reportedly received offers from Colorado State, Fresno State, Purdue and UNR. He visited UNR last month, and will visit Colorado State on Dec. 11.

* Taylor reportedly has offers from San Diego State, UNR and Utah State.
