UNLV camp report: First scrimmage to be secure; Nellis plays host
August 14, 2015 - 9:10 pm
UNLV leaves the comfort of Rebel Park for its first scrimmage of football training camp.
The Rebels head to Nellis Air Force Base, and for security reasons, today's 11 a.m. scrimmage is not open to the public.
"It's a completely different environment, kind of like traveling," coach Tony Sanchez said. "They'll be uncomfortable because it will be really warm, but I also think it's beneficial."
UNLV's depth chart should become clearer after the scrimmage, expected to last 60 to 70 plays.
Sanchez said a little more weight is applied to how players perform in the scrimmage compared with everyday practices because it's as close to a game-day atmosphere as the Rebels will face until the Sept. 5 season opener at Northern Illinois.
"We all know game day's a different environment," Sanchez said. "It's just different no matter how much you prepare for it. You've got to mentally to be ready to handle all the different pressures."
