UNLV shake-up: Hauck fires coordinators

UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck has fired offensive coordinator Brent Myers and defensive coordinator J.D. Williams, sources confirmed.

Several sources close to the program said Williams was fired, and one source said Myers also was let go.

Attempts to reach Hauck for comment on Friday were unsuccessful.

When asked last week about rumors of staff changes, Hauck said he hadn't made any decisions. It was an assertion supported by two sources with inside knowledge.

The Rebels' staff shake-up is the second in two years, but this one was more substantive. Myers and Williams were elevated to their positions following last season, but Hauck demoted the previous coordinators - Rob Phenicie on offense and Kraig Paulson on defense - rather than dismiss them.

It was unknown whether more changes would be made to the current staff. Five UNLV assistants worked under Hauck at Montana.

Big changes were not unexpected after the Rebels won only two games for the third season in a row. Hauck and athletic director Jim Livengood said following the season that their expectation was to win at least six games next year and become bowl eligible.

UNLV's offense showed much promise early this season but stumbled badly toward the end. The Rebels scored only 44 points in the final three games, dropping their season average to 22.0.

Their defense struggled most of the season, allowing 32.6 points and 445.2 yards per game. UNLV ended the season with a 48-10 loss at Hawaii.

Myers previously served at Louisville, Arizona State, Utah, Washington and Boise State. Williams, considered one of the Rebels' top recruiters, coached at Utah, Washington, California, Fresno State and San Jose State.

Whether UNLV feels Williams' loss during the recruiting season remains to be seen. The Rebels welcome their first group of visiting recruits this weekend. On Thursday, they secured an oral commitment by Basic High School's Devonte Boyd, one of the valley's top wide receivers.
