Virginia freshman QB facing DWI charge

Virginia freshman quarterback Nick Johns was charged with driving while intoxicated last month and has not been practicing with the team.

Johns was pulled over by police on July 26 after an officer observed him driving at night without his lights on. A blood analysis put Johns' blood alcohol level at 0.14, nearly twice the state's legal limit of 0.08, according to reports.

"I'm aware of Nick's situation," head coach Mike London said Monday. "He hasn't participated and he has a court date Sept. 28. And other than that, it's an internal matter and we'll handle it that way."

London did not indicate whether Johns has been suspended.

"He hasn't participated at this moment," London said of Johns practicing. "Those decisions will be made as time goes on here but right now, he hasn't participated in anything."

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Johns, who is not related to Cavaliers starting quarterback Matt Johns, was a three-star member of Virginia's 2015 recruiting class. He likely was a candidate for a redshirt this season.
