The linebacker couldn’t practice until his final grades posted and he was cleared by UNLV’s admissions office and went through an NCAA-mandated five-day acclimation period.

Mark Anderson has been at the Review-Journal since January 1999. He covered UNLV football for 17 seasons before moving to the men’s basketball beat in January 2016, and was president of the Football Writers Association of America in 2016. Before coming to the R-J, he covered UNR football for five seasons at the Reno Gazette-Journal and was the high school sports reporter for the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat from 1988-94. He is a native of Tallahassee and a graduate of the University of Florida.
UNLV could use the run-pass option a third of their offensive snaps this season. The offense favors the skill set of junior starting quarterback Armani Rogers.
Cleveland Edwards, an assistant men’s basketball coach on UNLV’s national championship team who later served as the interim head coach, died Saturday.
The junior responded to a subpar scrimmage a week ago with a much stronger performance Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium. He also was named a team captain.
UNLV players are encouraged to sit in one of the seven 100-gallon ice tubs after each morning practice. The water is around 55 degrees, but some players ask for extra ice.
The starters will receive some playing time, but many will spend most of the night watching when the Rebels scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium.
Will Kreitler is one of four graduate assistants at UNLV, and they work long hours as they try to establish their coaching careers.
The senior linebacker has been constantly around the ball in training camp, and also is making an effort to be more of a vocal leader.
UNLV has created the Rebel Rewards Program for season-ticker holders. Rewards are based on how many times tickets are scanned at each sport’s events.
The offensive lineman was forced to look elsewhere when Humboldt State dropped football last year. He landed at UNLV and is the second-team left tackle.
The Rebels senior wide receiver makes sure he is actively involved in the community. He has had a strong interest in serving others since he was 6.
The sophomore wide receiver, who caught 31 passes for 422 yards and six TDs last season, practiced Tuesday for the first time in pads since sustaining a concussion July 2.
UNLV’s season opener against Southern Utah on Aug. 31 will be streamed on unlvrebels.com, and the Sept. 7 game against Arkansas State on Facebook.
UNLV defensive end Nate Neal received athletic genes from both sides of his family. His mother, Yvette McLeod, was an 11-time All-America track athlete at USC and nearly made the 1988 Olympics.
