The Clark County Commission Wednesday rejected a developer’s request to approve a preliminary plan for 3,000 homes overlooking Red Rock Canyon before a federal agency grants permission for a roadway leading to the site.
Boulder City, population 15,970, limits its growth by putting a cap on residential construction. But Las Vegas builder Wayne Laska sees little competition and has launched a 127-home project there. His development, Boulder Hills Estates, will span about 30 acres and is the biggest new housing tract in the city in decades. Home prices start around $410,000. By comparison, the median sales price of newly built homes in the Las Vegas Valley last year was about $383,700.

Developers are putting up subdivisions, apartments, retail centers and other projects across Las Vegas. But the local construction industry is still nowhere near as big as it was during the bubble years of the mid-2000s. 63,900 people work in construction in Southern Nevada. Employment has nearly doubled since early 2012 but is still far below the peak of 112,000 in mid-2006. It’s hard for me to imagine such a surge of population that you would need to build housing, retail, schools and other things on the scale that was happening in 2005. — Ken Simonson, chief economist, Associated General Contractors of America

Installation of the roughly 4-foot posts, called bollards, began early Monday on the Strip near the Hawaiian Marketplace south of Planet Hollywood. They are meant to protect pedestrians walking on the Strip from vehicle-ramming attacks and traffic accidents, Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said. “It’s good to see those go up because there’s so much sidewalk here that isn’t protected,” said Maritza Cabrera. “It’s not just keeping cars off the sidewalk, it’s keeping people out of the street.”
Construction on the latest project begins Nov. 30 in the south end of the valley, where the Nevada Department of Transportation will build a $33.7 million freeway interchange for Interstate 15 at Starr Avenue. The interchange is aimed at easing traffic congestion in Henderson by filling a missing link in Starr between Las Vegas Boulevard and Dean Martin Drive. Starr Avenue will run six lanes with landscaped medians, bicycle lanes and sidewalks. The interchange is set to open by late next year.
