Local racer Riley Herbst has named to NASCAR Next, a list identifying young drivers on the fast track to stock car racing stardom. It was the second year in a row the 19-year-old racer was named on the list of nine drivers. Others who have been named NASCAR list include current Cup Series regulars Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, William Byron, Chase Elliott, Erik Jones, Kyle Larson, Daniel Suarez and Bubba Wallace. Herbst is a descendant of Las Vegas’ famous off-road racing Herbst family. His father, Troy, won the 2004 Baja 1000. “There’s a lot of talent coming up, and a lot of young racers chasing the dream in Las Vegas. It it weren’t for the Bullring and the drag strip and Las Vegas Motor Speedway, nobody would know what Las Vegas (has become) in racing out West.”

NASCAR has released its 2019 Cup Series schedule. It is exactly the same as the 2018 schedule. Every race will be back on the same weekend. Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s two race dates are March 3 and Sept. 15. The September race will once again open the NASCAR playoffs. The only thing that changes in 2019 is the off weekend for Easter. NASCAR will announce its Xfinity Series and Truck Series schedules at a later date.
A new Amazon warehouse could bring over 1,000 jobs to the Las Vegas Valley. Amazon executives are expected to announce plans Wednesday to build a 800,000-square-foot fulfillment center in North Las Vegas. The new warehouse is expected to be at a new industrial complex under construction near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The new facility is expected to pack and ship small items such as books, toys and household items. Amazon says the company will offer “competitive” pay and “comprehensive benefits starting on day one.” “This is Amazon’s third facility in North Las Vegas,” Mayor John Lee said. “A repeat customer is the best kind of customer, because it’s a testament to the quality we’re putting out and the results they’ve had in North Las Vegas.”
Kevin Harvick dominated Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He led a track record 214 of 267 laps. But there was a small problem. His rear window bowed during the race after a brace failed. NASCAR docked Harvick seven playoff points, fined his crew chief and suspended his car chief. The Stewart-Haas Racing team said it will consider options before submitting an appeal.

1. A California man died at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the first night of EDC. Michael Morse, 34, was pronounced dead just before 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Family members are now questioning the safety of EDC after saying they’ve seen comments online that lines for water were long on the first night of the festival. Insomniac Events did not respond to requests for comment Monday.
2. One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in the west valley. Police responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex near South Cimarron Road and West Charleston Boulevard just after midnight Tuesday. After police got a woman and child out of the apartment, police entered to find a man with a knife. Police attempted to use a stun gun on the man when he lunged at police and he was shot by two officers. The man was pronounced dead at UMC.
3. A Pizza Hut receipt helped police arrest a woman suspected of murder. Kevin Thomas suffered a gunshot wound to the head in November and detectives found the receipt under his body. The receipt had store and order information and the name “Betty” written at the top. Betty Ann Pires had been dating Thomas for three months prior to his death. Pires said she left Thomas at a Pizza Hut the night he was killed but two people came forward, saying Pires admitted to killing Thomas.

Spencer Gallagher talks about running at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
The 13th annual ARC-CSI conference began with crash test day on Monday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This is the twelfth year the conference has been held in Las Vegas.
Hundreds of people gathered along barricades to watch as cars slammed into concrete barriers, plowed into the back of buses and collided ead on into one another.
“This is an opportunity for guys to learn first hand about car wrecks. This is a lab, this is where they get to see what create the crash,” said W.R. “Rusty” Haight, the event organizer. All sorts of tests were undertaken, from small fender benders to collisions at more than 40 miles per hour. High speed cameras, drones and remote cameras attached inside the cars were used to capture all of the action.
