U.S. Women’s Hockey Upsets Canada to Win Olympic Gold Medal The U.S. beat Canada in a shootout in overtime to win their first gold in 20 years. The women from the United States went up 1-0 early before falling behind 2-1 in the second period. The U.S. would then go on to tie in the final period of play before forcing the penultimate shootout at the end of overtime. For Canada, the loss ended a streak of 4-straight gold medals at the Winter Olympics, dating back to 2002.
US Men’s Olympic Hockey Team Loses Shootout The team lost to the Czech Republic in a quarterfinal game at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Wednesday. The final score was 3-2 after the U.S. team was unable to get the puck into the goal. The Czech Republic team is now moving forward to the semifinals. While the men’s gold medal game is set for Sunday, the U.S. women’s team is competing for gold against Canada on Thursday.
Shaun White Wins Gold at 2018 Winter Olympics The American snowboarding superstar took to the halfpipe on Wednesday and posted a 97.75 score in his final run, beating out 11 other competitors including three Americans. The incredible win even moved White to tears. Chloe Kim Just Shredded the Women’s Halfpipe. The Internet Is Calling Her the Greatest of All Time Kim took the world by storm with her dazzling performance in the women’s halfpipe final, which earned her a gold medal. The 17-year-old not only crushed it at her first Olympics with a near-perfect score of 98.2 but won over the hearts of spectators with her humor. Kim tweeted this gem just hours before her gold medal performance and it isn’t the first time she posted about food. The American also became the youngest woman to capture a medal in snowboarding. She’s a rockstar!
Tim Jitloff will compete in the giant slalom on Feb. 18 in the Winter Olympics. Jitloff was born in San Jose and raised in Truckee before moving to Reno at 18. He mainly lives in Germany now, though his parents still live in Reno. Jitloff started skiing at two or three and competed in his first race at five. Jitloff was named to the 2010 Olympic team but did not compete. He raced in the 2014 Olympics, finishing 15th in the giant slalom.
Here are Some Facts and Figures to Prepare You For the Winter Olympics The first iteration of the Winter Olympics was held in Chamonix, France in 1924. The country with the most Winter Olympics medals is Norway with 329. The oldest competitor was Carl August Kronlund from Sweden, who was 58 years old during the 1924 Winter Games. The youngest competitor was Cecilia Colledge from Great Britain, who was 11 years old when she competed in 1932. Ole Einar Bjørndalen from Norway holds the record for most medals won with 13 total (eight gold, four silver and one bronze). This year’s Winter Olympics will be in Pyeongchang, South Korea and will feature 15 sports across 102 different events. According to the organizing committee, there will be 2,925 athletes competing from 92 countries. The 2018 Winter Olympics will begin on Friday, February 9 at 6 a.m. ET.
Evan Weinstock is the first Las Vegan to represent the United States in the Winter Olympics. Weinstock was a standout football player at Del Sol High School. In college, he was a decorated decathlete at Brown University. After Brown, he took up bobsled and made the U.S. national team in his first year in the sport. Weinstock will compete in the two-man and four-man bobsled in South Korea next month.
