UNLV edged past Air Force in overtime, 97-90, to advance to the Mountain West tournament quarterfinal against Nevada on Thursday.

UNLV’s Brandon McCoy was named MW Freshman of the Year. McCoy also was selected to the All-Mountain West second team. Teammate Shakur Juiston joined McCoy on the second team. UNLV point guard Jordan Johnson was named an honorable mention. Boise State’s Chandler Hutchison was chosen top player.
Last time the two teams faced each other, UNLV lost to Utah State 85-78. Utah State’s Sam Merrill and Koby McEwen are some of the Mountain West’s most effective backcourts. The Aggies can’t match UNLV’s Shakur Juiston and Brandon McCoy, who can help UNLV dominate inside. Both teams are on four-game losing streaks. The winner gets the No. 7 seed in next week’s MW tournament. It’s the final regular-season game for both teams. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Utah State.

The Rebels play Western Division champion Fresno State at Sam Boyd Stadium on Nov. 3, travel to San Diego State and Hawaii the following two weeks, and close the season at home against rival UNR on Nov. 24. UNLV, which opens Sept. 1 at Southern California, was 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference last season. Sanchez enters his fourth season, having increased the victory total by one each of the previous three seasons. “It’s an interesting schedule when you look at the way it’s broken up,” Sanchez said. “It’s really orderly.”

UNLV heads to San Diego on a three-game winning streak after a 81-73 win over Air Force. Tervell Beck has helped the UNLV frontcourt, scoring 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting against the Air Force Falcons. The Rebels haven’t won at Viejas Arena since 2013, and Aztecs fans usually make it a very difficult place for them to play. The game starts at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Eric Toliver, UNLV’s head of NCAA compliance who was under internal investigation after allegations of harassment were leveled against him, resigned Friday. The university issued a statement announcing the resignation but, citing a state regulation, declined to comment on the specifics. Toliver had been placed on administrative leave while UNLV investigated the allegations. Toliver was in his 26th year at UNLV and 18th as executive associate athletic director of compliance.
