Trade war could impact tourism in Las Vegas

Trade war could impact tourism in Las Vegas

A looming trade war with China may threaten visitation from one of the fastest-growing tourist markets. Chinese tourists traveled overseas on 131 million times in 2017, a 7 percent increase from the previous year, according to the China National Tourism Administration. With trade tensions escalating between China and the U.S., some believe tourism numbers in Las Vegas could take a hit. Gary Hufbauer, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, said a trade war’s biggest impact on Nevada would be a decline in wealthy Chinese travelers looking to gamble, an illegal activity in their home country. “My guess is that there will be many Chinese who will feel uncomfortable traveling to the United States if this trade war goes forward from here,” he said.

The Lotus apartment complex in Chinatown is different than most new rental projects in Las Vegas. It’s in an urban area near the Strip, and rental rates are well above average. It boasts such amenities as a rooftop deck, a poolside DJ booth, a karaoke room and a virtual-reality sports room. Most apartment projects in Las Vegas are in the suburbs, and areas like Chinatown haven’t had anything for a long time. “There really hasn’t been anything new built here in the last 30 years.” Lotus developer Jonathan Fore

Sunday’s NASCAR race at Chicagoland Speedway produced a thrilling finish. Las Vegas’ Kyle Busch held off Kyle Larson as the two banged into each other twice on the final lap. It was a fantastic finish on an intermediate 1.5-mile track — the kind of tracks that traditionally do produce abundant drama. Elsewhere, Stewart-Haas Racing said it expects all four of its drivers — including Las Vegan Kurt Busch — will return in 2018. Dustin Ash won a 76-lap main event at the Night of Fire at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The Lights FC got offensive in June. The Lights scored 12 goals in their five games last month. They totaled 11 goals in their first 10 games. The team is getting closer to owner Brett Lashbrook’s vision of an attacking team. It still is 12th place in the standings though with 19 games to go. We need to win 11 times, we need 11 (more) wins. We need to be convinced of what we can do, and we need to play all of these games to win.

Racial prejudice. Religious persecution. Gender equality. Those ripped-from-the-headlines topics may be timely, but they’re also timeless. Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” and “Othello” illustrate the point. So do the musical “Big River,” based on Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn,” and the farcical “The Foreigner.” The festival’s first production of “Henry VI Part One” also highlights the season, as does “An Iliad” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”
